The largest city of the Basque country, Bilbao is one of the leading provinces industrially and financially. It also has a major sea port. History says that the earliest settlement in this province could be traced to the year 1300. Archeological evidence has been found to suggest that it was basically a fishing village. This village which is bestowed with abundant natural beauty is now one of the country’s most progressive in terms of economy and industry. Some of the important places of interest in Bilbao are mentioned here:
Guggenheim Museum: Spain has many museums and this museum is unique in its construction. At the entrance to the museum one will find a dog. It is a sculpture made of flowers. This wonderful work of art has received applause from all those who have visited the museum. As a matter of fact, the museum was built in 1997 amidst protest from many people at the huge expense incurred for its construction. But now it has become one of the most popular museums and those who visit Bilbao make it a point to visit it. Designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, this museum is built using limestone, glass and titanium. Although the museum is not fully operational, there are some rare collections of paintings by great artists.
Basilica De Begona: According to archeologists it took about one century to complete this great basilica. Unfortunately the Basilica suffered some damage during the Carlist war in the 19th Century. Thereafter, it was reconstructed. This basilica is known for its most stunning architecture.
San Nicolas: It is believed that this church is built on an old hermitage and consecrated in the year 1756. San Nicolas is famous among sailors and it is said that this is the patron saint of most of the sailors in Spain. This is one of the most revered places among the Spanish people.
Kiosko del Arenal: This kiosk located on the banks of the famous river is popular for the band which plays there every day. The Bilbao town band is one of the most popular bands here. This most imposing building was built in 1923 but renovated 1985, and should never be missed by those who visit Bilbao.
Town Hall: Located on the other side of the river, this ne-baroque architecture is believed to have been built in 1892 under the stewardship of the great architect Joaquin Rucoba. This building attracts several visitors not only because of its most imposing beauty but also for the natural beauty around this great structure.
