Overview

Madrid is at a level of 646 meters above the sea level and is centrally located in the Iberian Peninsula. It is the capital of Spain and is the largest city in Spain. Climate

The climate in Madrid is continental Mediterranean; its winter is cool because of the higher altitude of its location and its temperature goes below 0 deg. C whereas in summer the temperature is as high as 40 deg. C. The snowfall here is sporadic. Winter and summer are dry seasons and rainfall occurs during autumn and spring.

History

Madrid has been in existence since the Paleolithic age; however it was made the capital of Spain by King Philip II only in the year 1561. Madrid de los Austrias is the old town and it represents the 16th / 17th century culture. The Plaza Mayor is the most popular spot in Madrid.

Art and culture

Madrid has 73 museums covering various disciplines of human knowledge. Some of the most popular ones are – the Prado Museum having art galleries, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum with paintings, tapestries and sculptures and the Reina Sofía National Art Centre dedicated to the present Spanish art.

Parks and Playgrounds

This city is one of the greenest capitals in Europe and the tourists and residents can go for long walks and enjoy the sunny climate; they can either enjoy their sunbath or row or feed the squirrels in the gardens or parks. The Retiro Park was once upon a time the playground for Spanish Monarchs; other famous parks are – the Juan Carlos I Park and the Casa de Campo.

It has two main centers for holding conferences and a large exhibition center – Campo de las Naciones. It has an international airport wherein 1000 flights come every week.
