Cadiz

By Allex at 2010-04-16 23:58:19
Cadiz was founded by Phoenician sailors about 3,000 years ago, giving it status as one of Europe’s oldest cities. With its beautiful 10km stretch of clean beaches, its ancient history and its vibrant celebrations, Cadiz is Spain in a nutshell.

History

The evidence of this ancient history can be seen in the town’s Archaeological sites. To experience the town’s rich history, visit the Plaza de Mina Archaeological Museum. There one can see the rare sight of Phoenician stone sarcophagi. The ruins of a Roman theatre can also be found in Cadiz.

Sights

The Cathedral of Cadiz is a good lookout point from which to view the city as one can walk up the high North Tower for spectacular views. Another way to view the town from an unusual vantage point is to visit the Torre Tavira, which is home to a "camera obscura". It provides a birds-eye view of the old part of town from a tower originally used as a lookout by merchants awaiting the return of their ships from sea.

Carnival in Cadiz

This takes place in February and goes on for over a week, with much singing, dancing and merry making. This is a busy time of the year for Cadiz as visitors flock from all over the country to take part in festivities.

Beaches

Playa de la Caleta in the north of the old town is famed for fabulous sunset viewing. Other popular beaches extend away from the old town in long stretches, offering well maintained swimming beaches such as those at Santa Maria Del Mar and Cortadura.

Food and Drink

Cadiz is famous for its fresh from the sea seafood. Because of the extremely high quality of its fish and shellfish, many Cadiz eateries showcase it with simple recipes that allow the flavour of the seafood to come through. Grilled bass, baked bream and boiled shellfish are all specialities of the area. Tapas bars such as those in the Calle Zorrilla and Calle de la Palma area serve fantastic deep fried anchovies and baby squid at inexpensive prices. For fine dining, go to Calle San Félix and visit the Restaurante El Faro.

A good place to sample the numerous and excellent local sherries is the Taberna de la Manzanilla, a well established bar and sherry merchant. Complimentary olives are served with your drinks.

Sample the local fare, the local history and the local entertainment and you will experience a memorable side of Spain.
